DC UL Backpacking is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2019. As part of the celebration, we’ll be featuring conversations with group members throughout July and August.
You may know Christy as Short Stick. Since she doesn’t hike with poles, the only thing she could find for a raging stream crossing was a . . . well, a short stick! Christy’s been with DC UL since 2012 and has attended over 50 events.
You’ve been with DC UL since the beginning. What brought you to DC UL? And what keeps you coming back?
I was looking for experienced hikers and backpackers to join on challenging, multi-day trips. My search led me to DC UL! The members are agile and savvy about life on the trail and our campfire laughs make me feel whole. Who doesn’t love to laugh?!
What’s been your favorite trip so far?
There’s no question in my mind that the Corsica GR-20 trip was my favorite.

What do you like best about DC UL?
Two things! Both the members and the hikes…
What advice do you have for newcomers to DC UL?
This is your unique opportunity to create incredible memories and forge new, long-lasting friendships, all while improving your outdoor skills and learning about yourself.
Where do you hope to go in the future with DC UL?
More international trips! Nepal is still on my list…
